The National Taipei University of Business, Department of Applied Foreign Languages was renamed in 2001 from the Department of Secretarial Science, which was founded in 1976. The Department of Applied Foreign Languages has inherited rich traditions and resources, yet also boast the energy and enthusiasm of a newly-founded department. Currently, the department offers a two-year college program, along with a five-year junior college program and an evening two-year college program and is scheduled to gradually move the main school system to two-year and four-year undergraduate programs. The department is also actively establishing a Master of Applied Foreign Languages program.

Outstanding Faculty; A leader among technological universities

The department’s faculty is known for their rich experience and devotion to education. In recent years, to further enhance the department’s curriculum, the department has been vigorously recruiting outstanding scholars capable of giving Foreign-language-exclusive lectures. The department’s faculty is in the lead among related departments and fields under university of technologies and technical colleges nation-wide. There are 21 full-time teachers in the faculty body, all of which possess specialties in the related fields of applied foreign languages, including 1 professor, ８associate professors, 6 assistant professors, and 7 lecturers.

Small class teaching implemented with an emphasis on solid foundation-building

“Solid Foundation, Dynamic Application” is the Department of Applied Foreign Languages’ guideline. Great emphasis is put on basic trainings such as English reading, writing, speaking, listening and translating. Small-class-teaching is implemented on English conversation, composition, and translation courses and number of classes opened is one of the most among related departments and fields under university of technologies and technical colleges nation-wide. Besides regular lecture classes, the department also holds numerous foreign language activities and camps and provides all sorts of learning and teaching resources to promote the students’ foreign language level.

Five categories of courses; Focused and multifaceted

The curriculum design objective is to improve all graduates’ competitiveness. Core courses are basic foreign languages ability (Main: English, Japanese; Supplementary: Spanish, German and French) and foreign language application knowledge. Courses are subject to five categories: English listening and speaking; English reading and writing; second foreign language; business and trade knowledge; theory and application of foreign languages.

All in all, the department designed students’ curriculum with the idea of meeting industrial and businesses’ needs, as in a package of “foreign languages, economics and trade practice, computer knowledge, and team work interaction”. While the department designed a suggested curriculum, it also encourages all students to discover their own interest and develop accordingly, including but not limited to pursuing further education, or take what was learned here and advance study in other fields.

E-classroom, ample supply of facilities

The department offers state-of-the-art learning and teaching equipments and facilities. There are one self-access learning space, one interpretation lab and one multimedia classroom. All general classrooms are fully equipped with audio-visual equipments and electronic systems to further advance students’ learning. There are also 7 language labs in the University’s audio-visual center to support language-related courses.

Prepare students for further studies or direct employment after graduation.

The undergraduate program is aimed to foster mid-level foreign language (focused on English) talents for all walks of life, especially in the international business, foreign language teaching, translation and interpretation, and cultural and creative industries. The program also offers counseling if the student is interested in graduate study.

The junior college program objective is to prepare students with basic foreign language knowledge, and have students ready to advance to 4-year universities or technological colleges. Besides numerous education advancement and employment placement events, the Department also established an alumni association, in the hope of building stronger relationships between current students, alumni and the department.
